EARTH FINDER

I felt that Nature was good.

I thought that if I could live in connection with Nature, I might get to understand something.
But even if I never understood anything, that couldn't be helped.

This was the only thing I could think of.
The thought gripped me and I felt impelled to somehow immerse myself in the flow of Nature as it changed before my very eyes

And then I had the good fortune to encounter photography.
I became convinced that what I was really looking for was life itself.

I was concentrating on the grass underfoot while walking a densely wooded animal trail along a cliff top overlooking the Pacific Ocean when I suddenly noticed a stag just ahead of me watching my movements.

Startled by the sudden appearance of this stag, with his large antlers, I stood there feeling slightly apprehensive while we held each other's gaze.

I was still wondering what to do when he turned on his heels and was eventually hidden from view as he slowly picked his way through the trees.
That was all that happened, but my brain went into shock and the blood pumped wildly through my body as I heaved a great sigh of relief.

In my first confrontation with a wild animal, it felt for a moment like something more than a mere animal--more like encountering an alien being.

The stag and I stood on the same ground, living our lives then as two separate beings on an equal footing.

In the deep and boundless realm of Nature, wild animals are small and almost insignificant beings, but the powerful sense of their life force probably stems from the complete moment-to-moment dedication of their physical and mental being to living.

Life is for living and this is the only life truly worthy of the name. In this world we can only claim to be alive when we use our life to live, not just to exist.

And behind any such attractive way of life is surely a strikingly beautiful and lively spirit of independence and self-respect.
(snip)

I'll say it again and again: as long as we are in this world, unless we deliberately use this life to live, we will not have truly lived.

Sometimes a bright light penetrates our hearts and touches our very souls.
Maybe this is a reflection telling us that we have reached the peak of life.

But it might also foreshadow death's stealthy approach.
Even so, we should probably welcome it as a sign that life is always in the process of creation. Why? Because only that light reveals the difference between life and death.

Nature welcomes only the life spent in living.

We should always put body and soul into living.

There is no better way to live.
There is no greater joy
There is nothing that means more.

How should we view this world of chaos?

Just as death exists within all life, so does salvation.

We find it only when we decide for ourselves to move from life as continuing existence to life for living, which is a truly ennobling form of strength.
